Business Japanese That Actually Works
Learn the language patterns, cultural protocols, and communication strategies used in real Japanese business environments—from first contact to signed contracts.
Keigo Without Confusion
Honorific language isn't just about memorizing verb forms. You'll learn when to use sonkeigo versus kenjōgo, how formality shifts with context, and why certain phrases work in emails but fail in meetings. We break down the three-tier system with examples from actual business scenarios—supplier negotiations, client presentations, internal reports.

Reading What Matters
Business documents use a specific subset of kanji and vocabulary. You'll focus on the characters that appear in contracts, financial reports, project proposals, and corporate correspondence. We skip literary kanji and prioritize the 800 characters that account for most business writing. Each lesson includes authentic materials—redacted contracts, actual meeting minutes, real email threads.
Cultural Mechanics
Saying the right words isn't enough if your timing, tone, or body language contradicts the message. We cover gift-giving protocols, business card exchange rituals, seating arrangements in meetings, and the unwritten rules of nemawashi—the informal consensus-building that happens before formal decisions. You'll understand why certain requests get rejected and how to position proposals so they gain traction.
Who This Program Serves
Three professionals who needed business Japanese for different reasons—and what they gained from structured instruction that prioritized real-world application over textbook drills.
Fiona Callahan
Supply Chain Manager
I was relying on translators for every supplier call and missing nuances in written agreements. Six months into this program, I can read procurement contracts independently and catch discrepancies before they become problems. The keigo section alone saved me from several embarrassing mistakes during factory visits.
Siobhan O'Doherty
Marketing Director
Our Tokyo office kept sending campaign briefs I couldn't fully understand. I'd studied Japanese years ago but business terminology was completely foreign. This course gave me the vocabulary to participate in strategy calls and review localized content without constantly asking for clarification. The cultural context lessons helped me understand why certain messaging angles worked in Japan when they failed elsewhere.
Margot Pemberton
Legal Advisor
Contract negotiations required me to understand not just legal Japanese but the implicit expectations around dispute resolution and liability clauses. The program's focus on authentic documents meant I could practice with materials similar to what I encounter daily. I still work with translators for final drafting, but I can now review terms independently and spot potential issues during initial discussions.
